What’s the Problem
Worldwide, Non-Profit Organizations reportedly received more
than $342 billion in donations in 2014.
A research study of the operating statements of 20 of the top 200 of the
more than 16 million NonProfits concluded that an average of 25% of every donated dollar was spent on general
administrative and marketing expenses.
When applied to the entire NonProfit community, on an annual basis this expense
equates to over $85 billion in giving that
will never make it to the causes these NPO’s are said to serve.
Why is this a concern?
The World Health Organization reports these facts:
- 6.3 million children under the age of five died
in 2013.
- More than half of these were due to
conditions that could be prevented or treated with access to simple, affordable
interventions.
- Over 3 million babies are stillborn
each year.
These statistics are staggering! If each one of these children were to be a
passenger on a Boeing 747, and that aircraft were to crash, the number of jumbo
jet crashes occurring on a daily basis would total over 70. The sad fact is that one civilian airline
crash receives more attention than a day of 17,260 preventable deaths of our
world’s children. All this is happening while NPO’s spend $225 million per day
to attract your well-intended, heartfelt donation.
Certainly most NPO’s have their heart
in the right place. Reasonable amounts
of a donated dollar are required to administer their mission. But here’s the sad truth. Most of them spend closer to 40 or 50% of the
giving dollar on expenses that never make it out the door of their operations.
In the For-Profit world this type of
excessive spending --resulting from internal process atrophy, drawn-out decision-making,
administrative bloating and abysmal customer service -- would not be tolerated. So why do we accept this continued, system-wide
squandering of our hard-earned donations?
